Exercise Science Pathway

Horizon Science Academy’s Exercise Science Pathway prepares students for careers in sports medicine, physical therapy, personal training, and athletic performance. Through a combination of hands-on training, scientific study, and industry certifications, students gain the skills needed to help individuals improve their physical health, prevent injuries, and enhance athletic performance.

Coursework

Students build a strong foundation in health, human movement, and fitness training through a well-rounded curriculum:

  • Health Science and Technology – Introduction to healthcare careers, medical ethics, and the fundamentals of health sciences.
  • Human Anatomy – In-depth study of the body’s muscles, bones, and physiological functions.
  • Medical Terminology – Understanding medical language and terminology relevant to sports medicine and exercise science.
  • Nutrition and Wellness – Exploration of dietary principles, wellness strategies, and performance-based nutrition.
  • Exercise and Athletic Training – Focus on injury prevention, rehabilitation, and strength training techniques.
  • Exercise Science Capstone – Hands-on project applying learned skills in athletic training, physical therapy, or fitness coaching.

Industry-Recognized Certifications

Students earn nationally recognized fitness and sports-related certifications, providing opportunities for employment in the fitness industry or further education in sports medicine:
NASM-CPT (National Academy of Sports Medicine – Certified Personal Trainer) – Certification to work as a professional fitness trainer.
OHSAA Officiating Certification – Certification to officiate high school sports events under the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA).

OSHA Healthcare Certification – Essential workplace safety training for medical professionals.
BLS/CPR (Basic Life Support & Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) – Life-saving skills training for medical emergencies.
